Shatter

Mixed Media 2014

Shatter is a sculptural mask made by breaking and reassembling pieces of glass and mirror. The intention for this piece is to examine the concept of beauty as it is presented in media, especially with respect to iconograpy. Shatter comments on the way we consume media and how models used in advertisements act as avatars for our desires and self image, as well as how we subsequently measure up to these ideals in reality. When the viewer stands in front of Shatter, they are confronted with a fragmented image of themselves, reflected back at them through bits and pieces of mirror. Shatter is an interactive art work: viewers moving around the sculpture create a distorted image of the self, a visual at odds when combined with the body of the model wearing Shatter.
